How to Prepare Your Car for Florida’s Hurricane Season

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and living in Central Florida means being prepared is essential. Here’s how to make sure your vehicle is ready for storm season.

Before Storm Season

• Check your battery: Ensure it’s in good condition and terminals are clean
• Inspect windshield wipers: Florida rain demands good wipers. Replace if they streak or skip
• Test your A/C: After a storm, you’ll need it. Make sure it’s working properly
• Check tire tread and pressure: Good traction is critical in heavy rain
• Top off all fluids: Especially coolant and windshield washer fluid
• Verify spare tire and jack: Make sure they’re present and in working order

Build an Emergency Car Kit

• First aid kit
• Flashlight with extra batteries
• Bottled water (1 gallon per person)
• Non-perishable snacks
• Phone charger/cable
• Paper maps (GPS may not work)
• Portable jump-starter
• Basic tool kit
• Reflective warning triangles
• Rain ponchos

During a Storm Warning

• Keep your gas tank at least half full at all times
• Park in a garage or away from trees if possible
• Move important documents to a waterproof bag in the car
• Charge your phone and any portable power banks

After a Storm

• Check for flood damage before starting your vehicle
• Look for debris under the car
• Inspect for fallen branches or damage
• Drive carefully — roads may have debris, standing water, or damage
