Warning Signs & Diagnostics

How Often Should You Replace Your Brake Pads?

One of the most common questions we hear from customers is: “How often do I need new brake pads?” The answer depends on several factors.

General Guidelines

Average lifespan: 25,000 to 65,000 miles
Factors that affect brake wear:

  • Driving habits: Aggressive braking wears pads faster
  • Driving conditions: City driving with frequent stops wears pads faster than highway driving
  • Vehicle weight: Heavier vehicles like trucks and SUVs wear pads faster
  • Pad material: Organic pads wear faster than ceramic or semi-metallic
  • Florida traffic: Orlando’s stop-and-go traffic can reduce pad life significantly

Warning Signs Your Brakes Need Attention

  • Squealing or squeaking: Most brake pads have wear indicators that make a high-pitched noise when pads are getting thin
  • Grinding noise: This means pads are completely worn and metal is contacting metal — immediate attention needed
  • Vibration when braking: Warped rotors often cause a pulsating brake pedal
  • Soft or spongy pedal: Could indicate air in the brake lines or a fluid leak
  • Car pulls to one side: Uneven brake wear or a stuck caliper
  • Brake warning light: Don’t ignore it!

The 5-Minute Visual Check

You can check your brake pads yourself without removing the wheels. Look through the spokes of your wheel — you should see the brake pad pressed against the rotor. If the pad material is less than 1/4 inch thick, it’s time for replacement.
